Woman killed after answering Craigslist nanny ad

Answering an online ad for a nanny job -- which she had done at least twice before without trouble -- cost Katherine Ann Olson her life, authorities said.

Olson, a 24-year-old St. Olaf College graduate, was found dead in the trunk of her car late Friday night. She was last seen by friends on Thursday morning, when she went to meet someone in Savage, Minn., about the job, which authorities said she had found on Craigslist.

Mom wars: To work or not to work?

For Jani Hart, being a working mom is almost like having a split personality. As an intern architect for Battle Creek's Architecture + Design firm, Hart's days are filled with client calls and business lunches.

As a mom, her nights are filled with bath times, helping with homework and playing dress up with her daughters, Jade, 9, and Joy,5.

For Hart, career success came before her decision to have children, and wasn’t something she wanted to give up.

“I have invested a lot in my career and it is part of who I am,” she said. “We certainly can’t afford for me not to work, but even when and if we can, I would still choose to work.”

Baby gear gets a manly makeover

Time was when carrying a diaper bag meant having to shoulder a puffy plastic tote with cutesy ducks or alphabet blocks.

It was a little unseemly for a mature woman, but looked downright ridiculous when a man carried around a bag with infantile design.

Today, cool-but-manly baby products are flooding the market - fleece DiaperVests by DadGear, based on fishing vests, and backpacks and messenger bags with skull and flame designs by Diaper Dude that, surprise, are organized to hold sippy cups, burping cloths and binkies and have room for an iPod Nano. Even traditional Eddie Bauer has gotten in on the hipster parenting trend with its version of a rugged diaper bag.

Baby's cold can be trickier to treat

Baby's up all night with the sniffles and a cough - and so are his worried mom and dad.

But with drug companies now voluntarily pulling infant cold medicines from the shelves, what can you do? Plenty, and plenty that may be more effective and safer, too, doctors say.

"We don't typically give her any medication," said Michael Adams, father to 1-year-old Alana in Lafayette, Colo. "The first thing we always try to do is keep saline in her nose. We use a humidifier in her room. We do steam baths. If she has aches, Tylenol."

So You Want To Start a Home Business?

So, you've decided to take the leap and start a home business? Great! Now...where to start?

Almost everyone, at some point in their lives, dreams of working from home and/or owning their own business. Unfortunately, many don’t think it’s really possible and never really take their dream to fruition. Usually it’s the fear of failure that holds people back from making their dream into a reality.

I’m here to tell you it IS possible and you can make money working from home. You just have to be willing to TAKE ACTION and follow through with your plans.

First things first. You need a business idea. There are countless legitimate home business ideas and opportunities out there. Here's a few, off the top of my head:

Freelance Writing, Web design, Medical Transcriptioning, Blogging, Internet marketing, Candle Making, Secretarial Service, Paid Surveys, Graphic design, Pet Sitting, Errand Running, Home Parties, Copywriting, Ebay, Online Trading, Real Estate, Photography, Domain Names, Wedding Consultant, Affiliate Marketing, Catering, Music Lessons, Online Tutoring.

There are a zillion more, but as you can see, it is possible to find something you enjoy that can be a great home business. The hard part is deciding which one you want to do!

All of these businesses are relatively low-cost start-up businesses. You don't need to invest hundreds of thousands just to start your own business. Some of the most successful businesses were started with very little start-up money.

The important thing to remember is it takes time to build up a successful business. Don't quit your job tomorrow! Keep your regular job while you build up your home business. Start your business part-time and let it grow. Once it reaches the point where you are making enough money, you can quit your day job.

So, have you chosen an idea or two to pursue? OK. What next?

You need to research your ideas and decide which one is the best fit for you. Google some of the ideas and see what kind of results you get. Forums are an excellent way to learn about your chosen business as well. Take time to research and learn everything you can before jumping in.

Keep yourself organized by making a to-do list and make an effort to work at your business every day in some small or big way.

That's enough for now. Take your short list of ideas and go research all you can. When you think you're ready, learn some more, then take the leap! You can do it!
